The Davidians and the Separation from their Teacher Jacques-Louis David acquired many students through being the founder of the Neo-Classical reformation, but despite their dedication to their teacher they did not stay loyal to teachings of David. Through social and political changes in the late 18th century David’s students saw an opportunity to break away from the characteristics of their teacher and the possibility that differentiating themselves from David would further increase their chances for success. David was born on August 30, 1748 in Paris into a wealthy merchant family; his parents were Louis-Maurice David and Marie-Genevieve Buron. His father had taken over the family merchant business dealing in various forms of decoration. His mother came from a more modest social position but had many relatives with artistic talent. When David was at the age of 9, his father was killed in a duel, which was most likely caused by his short temper. After his father’s death, his mother gave him over to his uncle Buron and Desmaisons. David then went on to a succession of s......
