British Mercantilism and Its Effects on the Colonies Mercantilism is the idea that the prosperity of a country is determined by its capital. Mercantilism was at its peak from the 1600’s to the late 1800’s. Governments got involved in the economy by creating mercantilist policies such as the Navigation Acts. These policies were designed to maximize the countries capital by increasing exports and decreasing imports. The Navigation Acts would have been a disaster for the economy of the British colonies if enforced to their entirety. Mercantilist policies had many good effects on the colonies though. They played a large role in bringing about the separation of England and the colonies, they guaranteed a market for colonial goods in England, and also helped to specialize the colonial economy. Mercantilist policies were intended to benefit the mother country of England. Almost all policies were meant to undermine the colonies little by little, and of course the colonists realized this.
