John Updike’s “A&P” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“A&P” John Updike’s “A&P” is a short story about a boy that works in a grocery store as a checkout clerk. Sammy, the protagonist, quits his job one Thursday afternoon after disagreeing with his manager’s indiscretion. Lengel, Sammy’s manager, makes a comment to three young girls about the way they are dressed inside the supermarket. Sammy desperately tries to portray heroism by quitting his job. He desperately seeks the girls’ attention. The entire story takes place during Sammy’s shift, inside the store. This story is told in first person point of view. Sammy is the narrator. “A&P” was written in the 1960’s. Critics Robert Peltier, Lawrence Jay Dessnar, and Harriet Blodgett take different approaches in analyzing “A&P.” It is very clear that Peltier analyzed the story using a historical approach. He goes on to mention that Sammy was not dogmatic in his thinking. People back then spoke out in different ways against the uniformity of American Society.
