Courtly Love Courtly love is a type of romance that provided a model of behavior for unmarried young men to help others and perform good deeds in the late eleventh century. I believe this code of behavior helped control lawlessness during medieval times. Courtly love was viewed as an art with rules and was traced through the lines of male poets, troubadours, and patrons of literature. Today, instead of the term "courtly love" people refer to it as being a gentleman or lady. The idea of courtly love is the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege lord. This basically means the knight serves his courtly lady with the same obedience and loyalty that he owes to his liege lord. She is in complete control of the love relationship; while he owes her obedience and submission. (Debora B.
