One theoretical explanation of behaviour from the cognitive approach is the theory of cognitive dissonance, which deals with how cognitions may affect behaviour. Cognition could be defined as mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment. One of the most successful theories related to the idea of cognitive consistency is cognitive dissonance theory developed by Festinger(1975). Festinger was interested in the relationship between cognitions and the theory of cognitive dissonance is based on the assumption that a state of tension is created when there are conflicts between an individuals behaviour and beliefs. However, this theory has been supported in many ways as well as been challenged, partly because the theory provides a more western explanation of behavioural change rather in nonwestern cultures.
