Orphanages in the 1920's Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Orphanages are known for being under-funded, dirty, and for having mean, hateful people running them. Famous examples are Oliver Twist, Anne of Green Gables, and Anne. Not many or very few orphanages were like those in the movies. The high number of orphanages in the 1920’s was caused by three things: the industrial revolution, World War II, and relaxed morals. The mid-1800’s, urbanization and the industrial revolution brought long work hours, crime, unhealthy living conditions, poverty, and relaxed morals. These problems along with other problems of big city living did not help the situation. The civil war also claimed many men’s lives who were the breadwinners of their families. By the 1914’s the orphan’s were more and more victims of unwed parents, neglect, abandonment, immigration, and abuse. Families who could not feed or care for their children could drop them off at a church or orphanage and come back for them when they could care for them. Many children only stayed for a few months but others were left there permanently until they could care for themselves. T......
