Tatums book is engaging and thought-provoking. It is written in an easily-readable manner, and tackles inarguably complex subject matter in a thorough yet concise way. As I read the book, I found that Tatum was able to help me construct new perspectives on subjects with which I already felt familiar, and in which I held existing opinions. Although I do not agree wholeheartedly with all of Tatums points and even found her a bit hypocritical at times, I am amazed at how much my perspective shifted through the course of reading this book.
I think creating this shift in perception is a facet of what I see as Tatums main goal; to help people, primarily White people, become active antiracists. I believe that in writing this book she intended to achieve her goal through addressing relevant race issues and some of the beliefs, emotions, and perspectives that underlie these issues. I also believe that she intended to help her readers see the subtle racism that underlies our society, and not assume that because overt racism is less common than in times past racism no longer exists.......
