"A Worn Path," Eudora Welty Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In "A Worn Path," Eudora Welty implies several times throughout the story that Phoenix Jackson is living a concluding life. She is living on borrowed time, resorts to theft for money, and even accepts handouts for something that does not exist. The theme of denial in Phoenix's head also shows through the entire story, but eventually surfaces at the end. Phoenix Jackson shows signs of great perseverance, as the story is a tale of her lonely trek from her home in the rural south into a city full of unfamiliar sights and fast paced living. Her ability to sustain is much more than just physical. The journey she takes is metaphor for the times changing around her. Nonetheless, she never complains of the change, she just keeps walking, regardless of the fact that people along the way do not even offer her a jacket in the dead of winter. Dean Betha notes "no one in the story offers to 'walk' even a mere yard with Phoenix, neither on the specific and perilous trip at hand nor on the larger 'journey' that is her life."
