The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin, explains how Mrs. Mallard grieves and celebrates her husbands death. Much to her surprise Mr. Mallard is not only alive, but he knows nothing of the accident that supposedly killed him.
Mrs. Mallard bears with the news of her husbands death in a peculiar way. She never refused to believe the truth. Most people would hysterically deny the fact that it is true. There has to be some mistake! is often a response. Sitting alone in that roomy armchair Mrs. Mallard takes in the gravity of losing her husband. The tone quickly changes when she is saying to herself, Free, free, free! (pp 39). I look at the years in which Mrs. Chopin lived and think of the setting of this story. In history, wives were owned; they were property. Women were to do as they were told, not to speak unless spoken to, and to simply live to please their husbands regardless of love.
