Why We Lost the War in Vietnam Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Vietnam War marked the first time the United States was defeated in a large-scale military dispute. The failure of the U.S. government to adopt an effective military and political strategy resulted in prolonged war with no foreseeable end. Ultimately, retreat from Vietnam was a blow to U.S. power and prestige and put doubt in the minds of the global community as to the scope of U.S. influence. Similarly, this loss challenged notions that the U.S. could or should police the world scene and, more exposed the fallibility of the U.S. government. But in order to fully grasp the consequences of the war in Vietnam, one must first understand how the U.S. got embroiled in this protracted conflict. U.S. involvement in Vietnam reflects the containment policy that was central to U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War. Of course, Vietnam posed no immediate threat to American; however, it was believed that if communism were allowed to spread, other nations would follow suit resulting in an unstable dynamic between the democratic-west and communism.
