James M. McPherson was born North Dakota and raised in Minnesota. Also, Mr. McPherson went and graduated from Johns Hopkins University. While he was in the university, he got mentored by C. Vann Woodward. James McPherson is one of the greatest American Civil War writers, and not just said by me but as well as by many historians today. Since he has written and edited many books about The American Civil War, it leads me to believe that he was extremely well qualified to write the book "What They Fought For".
The book "What They Fought For" comes from the larger book that James McPherson wrote titled "Why They Fought". This book talks about the Confederate and Union soldiers who fought in the Civil war, and the reasons they fought. McPherson's research to write this book consisted of numerous letters written by the soldiers to their parents, fiancés, wives and other family members. Chapter one talks about the Confederate's thoughts, chapter two is about what the union soldiers believed in, and the last chapter is about what both sides thought ab......
